Amit Prakash

Amit is first and foremost a news junkie who came to the realization that you need to know the history of a thing in order to understand it at all. After graduating from Oberlin College, he taught high school history in Washington, D.C. for a few years—it was there before angsty teens that he realized he probably didn’t know enough history yet to be teaching it. So, he pursued a Ph.D. in European history at Columbia University and has taught at Columbia, Bryn Mawr College, Poly Prep, and Trinity School. He’s published articles and book reviews in French Historical Studies and The Historian. He was tapped to write a book about a significant but forgotten figure from late 19th century America, which made him weirdly obsessed with Arctic exploration in the 1870s. He currently teaches global studies at Middlebury College in Vermont and is completing a book on the policing of North Africans in Paris that is under contract with Oxford University Press.
